Personnel and materials entering or exiting the controlled environment are "scrubbed" by high-velocity HEPA- or ULPA-filtered air. This removes dust, fibrous lint, and other contaminants from personnel or object surfaces. Contaminated air is then drawn through the base within the unit, filtered and recirculated. When properly integrated into the design of the cleanroom, air showers provide an ISO classified transition area ensuring cleanroom cleanliness is maintained.
